First, as the results on PSR show, BCAST (the more efficient broadcast protocol) achieves its high packet delivery ratio with fewer packet transmissions per packet delivered (counting only interested multicast receivers) then any other protocol. Second, due to the nature of the wireless media, it is rather unlikely that nodes that are not participating in a multicast group can actually utilize the media. All multicast protocols will elect nonparticipating nodes to relay data if this becomes necessary to reach all multicast receivers.

E. , rc ≥ 2rs . Since it is possible to control and adjust sensor’s radio power, this assumption can be easily satisfied. In our following description, we assume that rc = 2rs . (3) Each sensor knows its own position. The location information can be obtained by means of GPS or other localization service. Many research efforts into localization problem in wireless sensor network [14,15] make this assumption realistic. (4) No more than one sensor is located at the same position. If there is more than one sensor at the same location, in each time round, one sensor can be randomly chosen as active and others go into sleep state.

In wireless sensor networks that consist of a large number of low-power, short-lived, unreliable sensors, one of the important design challenges is to reduce energy consumption and prolong network lifetime. In this paper, we propose a decentralized and localized density control algorithm that prolongs network lifetime by keeping a minimal number of sensors in active mode while not scarifying any sensing coverage.
