Sade himself commended ‘Ernestine’, and remarked that no novel or short story depicted ‘the escalations and miseries of libertinage’ more effectively than ‘Eugénie de Franval’. There was also a strong case for including both ‘Faxelange’ and ‘Florville and Courval’, and for preferring the latter to its shorter doublet, ‘Dorgeville’. ‘The Comtesse de Sancerre’ is a more concentrated version of the theme which is treated at a more leisurely pace in ‘Lorenza and Antonio’. ‘Rodrigo’ is included as Sade’s only fullblown excursion into French gothic, and ‘Henrietta Stralson’ because it is Sade’s most Richardsonian tale.
His style is measured, and the sadism on offer is entirely psychological. There is no more physical violence than in the average adventure novel of the time, no overtly erotic acts, no hint of lewdness or bawdy humour. Instead of pictures of torture, he shows the psychological impact of sadism. He shows death, but not violent dying. He focuses on the reactions of Faxelange as she watches the prisoners being killed beneath her window, on Ernestine’s feelings as she sees Herman executed, on the despair of Henrietta Stralson who is confronted by Williams’s corpse.
Chronology xli His unsavoury reputation makes him unwelcome at court and blocks his military career. April: birth of a daughter, Madeleine-Laure (d. ); July– September: imprisoned for debt.
